The Garden Club of the Sandhills and the Southern Pines Garden Club’s first meeting of 2017 was a joint meeting held at Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities on January 23.
A program demonstrating floral arrangements using plant materials from the garden was given by floral designer Matt Hollyfield. The arrangements were then presented to three garden club members that have done outstanding work in the community; Alice Robbins, Cav Peterson and Joanne Kirkpatrick.
The Garden Club of the Sandhills ended 2016 with a Magical Mystery Holiday Tour and luncheon at the Sandhills Community College on December 14th. This year the Club became a Summa Diamond ($100,000+) contributor to the college. We appreciated SCC opening its doors to allow garden club members to celebrate the college’s success and see some of the programs the college offers.
Christmas fruitcake was the theme. The day full of activities included an interpretation of Christmas through film given by Ron Layne, vice president of College Initiatives, watching and cheering on the Flyers basketball team, a tour of the Culinary department with Executive pastry chef Martin Brunner and lunch.
Each luncheon table had boxes of candies, cookies, icing and fruitcakes and members at each table were to create a fruitcake center piece using the various goodies while strains of Jimmy Buffett’s Fruitcake song played in the background. The Emmanuel Episcopal church was created by the winners; Dolores Muller, Martha Vance Thorton, Nancy Smith and Lydia Gill. As the Sandhills Garden Club continues to support the college and other organizations through their fund raising efforts, it was a fun day to celebrate the holidays and the garden club’s 50 years of community service.
